Price and availability on Husqvarna's site may differ.

An 86cc saw that ships on a 28-inch bar for $1,540 is aimed at a specific buyer: someone felling big timber often enough to need the bar, but not running a saw hard enough to justify the 592 XP. The odd part of the spec sheet is the weight — at 16.5 lb the 585 is actually two tenths heavier than the 92.7cc 592 XP above it, because the XP gets the lighter magnesium-intensive build. So the 585 is the heavier, less powerful, cheaper saw of the pair, and the $140 gap between them is small enough that anyone genuinely working in big wood should price both. Where the 585 earns its place is as a second saw or a landowner's big saw: X-Torq fuel economy, a 36-inch bar rating, and heavy .063 H83 chain standard, without flagship money. It is not a limbing saw and it is not trying to be.

Best for: Landowners and part-time fallers who need a big-bore saw and a 28-inch bar without stepping up to the 592 XP.

Manufacturer figures except the engine class and single-pass cut, which are derived here. What each spec means

  • 86cc on a 28-in bar
  • Rated to 36 inches
  • Heavy .063 H83 chain standard

Where it is strong

  • 86cc and 6.9 hp with a 28-inch bar and chain included at $1,540
  • Rated to a 36-inch bar, enough for most hardwood felling in North America
  • Heavy .063 H83 chain standard — more durable in dirty wood than narrower gauges
  • X-Torq engine keeps fuel burn reasonable for the displacement
  • Three chain gauge options so the saw can be set up light for bucking or heavy for felling

Where it falls short

  • At 16.5 lb it is heavier than the more powerful 592 XP — the XP has the lighter build
  • Only $140 separates it from the 592 XP, which makes the value case awkward
  • 16.5 lb powerhead plus a 28-inch bar is a two-hands-and-a-break saw, not a limbing tool
  • No AutoTune at this price, where the XP flagships get electronic management
