An old design, and the owners who like it like it for exactly that reason. The CS-680 is heavy, slow-revving and full of low-end torque — the phrase that keeps coming back is that it is built the way saws used to be built. Its 66.8cc sits between the 59.8cc CS-620P and the 73.5cc CS-7310P, and the honest consensus among people who have run all three is that the 620P will out-cut it on anything up to a 24-inch bar, which makes the 680 a narrow recommendation: it earns its place when you are hanging 24 or 27 inches off the front and want the extra displacement pulling it. Features are genuinely pro — rim sprocket, aluminium handle with rubber grip, PowerMatch bar, top-mounted tool-less filter cover, and an adjustable oiler with a manual override for long bars in dry wood. At 14.6 lb it is the heaviest Echo short of the 7310P, and it still uses a plastic sprocket cover where the 620P gets magnesium.

Best for: Cutters who regularly hang a 24- or 27-inch bar and want displacement rather than revs doing the work.

Manufacturer figures except the engine class and single-pass cut, which are derived here. What each spec means

  • 66.8cc torque-first engine
  • Oiler with manual override
  • Takes a 27-inch bar

What owners like

  • 66.8cc with a low, torquey power delivery owners describe as built like saws used to be
  • Adjustable oiler with a manual override — genuinely useful running long bars in dry hardwood
  • Rim sprocket, aluminium handle with rubber grip and PowerMatch bar are proper pro-grade parts
  • Top-mounted tool-less air filter cover keeps in-field servicing quick
  • Takes bars up to 27 inches, covering real felling work
  • 5-year consumer warranty on a saw in this class

Common complaints

  • Owners who have run both say the lighter CS-620P out-cuts it with anything under a 24-inch bar
  • 14.6 lb powerhead and a slow-revving character make it tiring next to modern 70cc saws
  • Plastic sprocket cover where the cheaper CS-620P gets magnesium
  • An older design that Echo has not refreshed alongside the X Series saws
  • $779.99-$799.99 puts it above the CS-620P with no clear advantage below a 24-inch bar
