1.8 kW on a 6.4 lb powerhead with a 14-inch bar, and the saw that convinced a lot of gas holdouts that battery was real — owners describe being startled by the diameter it will go through and glad to have saved their hearing and their arms against a big gas Stihl. Runtime on an AP 300 is around 45 minutes. It is also the model that draws the sharpest criticism in trade circles, where opinion runs that nobody using them professionally likes them, largely because 45 minutes of cutting and a 14-inch bar is not a working day and the AP packs to fix that cost real money. $410 is tool only. Priced against the MSA 220 C-B at $450 tool only, which makes 2.1 kW and takes a 16-inch bar, this one is hard to argue for unless weight is the whole point.

Best for: Owners already stocked with AP batteries who want a light, quiet saw for limbing and storm work rather than a day's production cutting.

Manufacturer figures except the engine class and single-pass cut, which are derived here. What each spec means

  • 1.8 kW, 6.4 lb powerhead
  • 45 min on an AP 300
  • Tool only at $410

What owners like

  • 1.8 kW from a 6.4 lb powerhead — cuts far bigger wood than its size suggests, as owners report
  • 10.2 lb with the AP 300 fitted, light enough for sustained overhead limbing
  • No fumes and far less noise and vibration than a 40cc gas saw of similar capability
  • Toolless tensioner, oil-level window and Ematic oiling
  • Shares AP packs across Stihl's professional battery range

Common complaints

  • $410 tool only, and the stronger MSA 220 C-B is $450 tool only — the 200 is awkwardly placed
  • About 45 minutes of cutting per AP 300, so production work means buying several packs
  • Professional users are openly unenthusiastic about this model; it is sized for property work
  • 14-inch bar and 3/8" Picco chain cap the diameter it will take in hardwood
