Sixty cuts on the 4.0Ah pack that comes in the box, 130 if you feed it an 8.0Ah — that gap is the whole story of Ryobi's 16-inch HP saw, and it is why the kit price and the real cost of ownership are different numbers. The saw itself is the sensible middle of the 40V range: a 16-inch bar on full .050-gauge chain, a 28-inch cut capacity, and a 40cc-gas power claim that holds up in softwood and softens in oak. It supersedes the older non-HP RY40530 and RY40550, and the brushless motor is the reason to pay the difference. The $219 bare-tool version is the one that makes sense for anyone already running Ryobi 40V mowers and blowers; at $299 with the small pack, you are paying battery prices for a battery you will want to replace.
Best for: Home Depot shoppers on the Ryobi 40V platform who want a middle-size saw for storm cleanup and light felling.
