Two batteries, one saw: Milwaukee's answer to the 70cc gas class runs a pair of FORGE XC8.0 packs in parallel and claims 5.8 peak horsepower, 9.5 Nm, and a two-speed gearbox so you can trade chain speed for torque. It carries a real .325"/.050 chain on a 20" bar, which is the first time an M18 saw has used professional chain rather than narrow kerf. The cost of that capability is mass and money — 19.9 lb with both packs loaded, and $899 for the kit, more than a 70cc gas saw and two spare chains. Owners who have switched off gas describe it as surprisingly well balanced for the weight and effective at felling, but the honest runtime figure is Milwaukee's own: about 60 cuts in 10" hardwood per charge of two 8.0Ah packs. Plan on a second pair if you are bucking all day.

Best for: Tradespeople and utility crews already deep in M18 who need gas-class felling power and cannot run two-stroke on site.

Manufacturer figures except the engine class and single-pass cut, which are derived here. What each spec means

  • 5.8 HP peak, 70cc claim
  • .325"/.050 pro chain
  • Runs two M18 packs

What owners like

  • Genuine professional chain spec — .325" pitch, .050" gauge, 78 drive links — so bars and loops come from any saw shop
  • Two-speed gearbox and a power-mode button let you pick chain speed or torque instead of accepting one setting
  • 5.8 HP peak with a 70cc-equivalence claim, the strongest figure on any 18V platform
  • Runs on the same M18 packs as the rest of the fleet; no new battery system to buy into
  • Inertia chain brake, metal bucking spikes, scabbard and scrench in the box

Common complaints

  • 19.9 lb with both packs loaded — heavier than most 70cc gas saws with a full tank
  • $899 for the kit, and it is useless with only one battery installed
  • About 60 cuts in 10" hardwood per charge of two 8.0Ah packs, so a full day means a second pair of FORGE packs
  • Demands FORGE or HIGH OUTPUT 8.0Ah packs; older M18 batteries will not deliver the rated output
  • Long at 37.5" overall, awkward in tight brush compared with a 16" saw
