A 16" bar on a top-handle saw is unusual — most of the class stops at 14" — and that is the reason to look at this one. 7.5 lb bare, 10.3 lb with two 5.0Ah LXT packs fitted, 3,940 FPM, and a 30cc-gas equivalence claim. It is the lightest ready-to-cut 16" saw here, a shade under Stihl's MSA 220 C-B with its AP 300 S pack, which is the whole argument for the X2 approach: two small packs sit closer to the handle than one big one. Against it: the 30cc equivalence is modest for 16" of bar, so the chain speed falls off in hardwood faster than the bar length promises, and a 16" top handle is a long lever to control one-handed at height. It also runs the same two-pack arithmetic as the rest of the X2 line — every charge costs two batteries. The kit at about $599 includes two 5.0Ah packs and a dual-port charger.

Best for: Climbers and tree crews on 18V LXT who want maximum reach from a top handle at the lowest possible weight.

Manufacturer figures except the engine class and single-pass cut, which are derived here. What each spec means

  • 7.5 lb bare
  • 16" top handle, rare
  • Two 5.0Ah packs included

Where it is strong

  • Lightest 16" saw here with batteries fitted at 10.3 lb — the X2 layout keeps mass near the handle
  • 16" of bar on a top handle, longer reach than almost anything else in the class
  • Captured bar nut and tool-less adjuster, so bar service in a tree does not mean dropped hardware
  • Two 5.0Ah LXT packs and a dual-port charger in the kit, usable across Makita's 18V range
  • Weather-sealed XPT construction, which matters on a saw used in wet canopy work

Where it falls short

  • 30cc-gas equivalence is modest behind a 16" bar; it slows noticeably in hardwood
  • Needs two charged 18V packs per run, doubling the battery cost of every hour of cutting
  • A 16" bar on a one-hand-capable top handle is a long lever; it demands trained technique and full PPE
  • 3,940 FPM is slower than the 40V XGT top handles Makita sells alongside it
