Because Makita refused to build it to a price: a smooth, torquey 14.5-amp motor with current-limiter protection, effective anti-vibration (rare in the corded class), a metal spike bar, and build quality in a different league from the $99 standard-bearers. It's the only professional-grade corded chainsaw on the market — you're paying for the tool, not the category.

It trails the cheap competition's 2-3 years on paper, which is a fair gripe at $279. In practice, buyers are betting on build quality over paper coverage — the same trade Makita's pro power tools ask — and the corded design has no engine, carb, or battery electronics to fail. If warranty length is your deciding factor, the value-tier saws win that column.

Better than anywhere else in the corded class: tool-less chain tensioning that actually works properly, plus a large oil reservoir with a view window so you can check the level at a glance. It runs standard 3/8 low-profile .050 chain, so replacement loops are cheap and everywhere.

Shops, farms with power at the woodpile, and serious users who cut near an outlet weekly — anyone for whom a corded saw is a primary tool rather than a storm-kit backup. For occasional woodpile duty it's overkill; a Worx or Greenworks does that job at a third of the price. It also gives you unlimited runtime for less than any comparable battery kit.
