Makita's biggest single-battery saw and the one the XGT platform was really built for: 42cc-gas equivalence, 5,020 FPM, a .050-gauge chain on an 18" bar, and 11.7 lb before the pack goes in. What reviewers single out is boring and important — the chain tensioner is a steel conical mechanism against two stout bar studs rather than a plastic dial, and it stays where you set it instead of creeping mid-cut. Oil delivery keeps the bar wet through long rips, though owners note the reservoir drains fast enough that you watch it. The honest limits are the price and the platform: $679 for the kit, XGT packs are expensive and share with nothing outside the XGT line, and at 14.6 lb ready to cut it is no lighter than the gas saws it replaces. If you are already on XGT this is the obvious big saw. If you are not, the platform cost is the real decision.

Best for: XGT platform owners cutting firewood and storm damage who want a .050-chain 18" saw with pro-grade bar hardware.

Manufacturer figures except the engine class and single-pass cut, which are derived here. What each spec means

  • 42cc claim at 5,020 FPM
  • Steel conical tensioner
  • 11.7 lb bare

What owners like

  • Mechanical steel tensioner and two stout bar studs — reviewers report it holds tension where dial systems creep
  • Full .050-gauge chain rather than narrow kerf, so it takes standard 3/8" LP loops
  • 5,020 FPM with a 42cc equivalence claim, among the faster chains on a single-battery saw
  • Oil delivery holds up through long rips with no bar discolouration reported after back-to-back rounds
  • XPT weather sealing and captured bar nuts, built to Makita's jobsite standard
  • 11.7 lb bare is reasonable for 18" of bar

Common complaints

  • $679 for the kit, and XGT batteries are expensive and interchange with nothing outside the XGT line
  • 14.6 lb ready to cut — no lighter than the 42cc gas saw it is pitched against
  • Owners report the oil reservoir needs watching; it drinks more than its size suggests
  • 3-year tool and battery warranty, shorter than EGO's and Milwaukee's tool terms
  • Makita sells a second 18" XGT saw (GCU06) alongside it, which makes the lineup hard to shop
