Price and availability on Lowe's's site may differ.

Three hundred cuts of 4x4 on one 5.0Ah charge is the number Kobalt leads with, and it is the honest reason to look at this saw: among $300 battery kits, almost nothing else ships a pack that big. The 80V brushless motor claims 50cc-gas equivalence at 20 m/s of chain speed, there is an inertia-activated chain brake rather than a hand-guard trip, and the 5-year tool warranty is the longest anyone gives at this price. The number Kobalt does not lead with is 16.9 lb with the battery in — this is the heaviest 18-inch battery saw in the catalog, two to four pounds over comparable Greenworks and Ryobi saws, and you feel every ounce after an hour of limbing. As a Lowe's house brand it has no dealer network and no maker's website; the Lowe's listing is the product page, the parts counter, and the warranty desk.

Best for: Lowe's shoppers who cut in long ground-level sessions and will trade weight for runtime.

Manufacturer figures except the engine class and single-pass cut, which are derived here. What each spec means

  • Claimed 300 cuts on a 5.0Ah pack
  • 50cc-class claim, 20 m/s chain
  • 5-year tool warranty

Where it is strong

  • Ships a 5.0Ah battery at $299, larger than almost anything at the price
  • Claimed 300 cuts of 4x4 per charge is the longest runtime in the big-box battery tier
  • Inertia-activated chain brake, not just a hand-guard mechanism
  • 5-year tool warranty beats Greenworks, Craftsman and most of the field
  • On-board tool storage and an auto oiler come standard

Where it falls short

  • 16.9 lb with the battery — heaviest 18-inch battery saw here, and punishing overhead
  • Kobalt has no manufacturer website, so specs, parts and support all run through Lowe's
  • 80V Kobalt packs fit only Kobalt tools, a much smaller range than Ryobi or Greenworks
  • Resale and parts availability depend entirely on Lowe's continuing to stock the platform
