The oldest saw still in EGO's catalog and the one long-term owners keep for the unglamorous reason that it starts every time. 6,800 RPM and a 30cc-gas equivalence claim put it squarely in limbing territory; owners who have run one two or three years describe it as the saw they reach for 80% of the time because there is no pull cord, while the same threads complain the spikes are too shallow to bite wet bark and that it runs out of grunt in anything hardwood over about 8". The 2.5Ah kit pack is the real limit — EGO's own figure is 100 cuts in a 4x4, and that is pine. The CS1401 also predates the metal bucking spikes and twist-dial tensioner that the CS1611 and CS1815 got, so you are buying the old chassis at a price that now sits uncomfortably close to EGO's newer 16" kit. Worth it only if 14" is genuinely the bar you want.

Best for: Suburban owners with a short limb-and-brush list who already own 56V packs and specifically want a 14" bar.

Manufacturer figures except the engine class and single-pass cut, which are derived here. What each spec means

  • 6,800 RPM, 30cc claim
  • Oldest chassis in the line
  • 100 cuts on a 4x4

What owners like

  • Long owner track record — multi-year reports of the saw simply working with no starting ritual
  • Reversible bar and narrow-kerf sprocket nose stretch bar life on a saw that gets intermittent use
  • Tool-free chain tensioning, and replacement 14" bars and chains are cheap and widely stocked

Common complaints

  • Shallow bucking spikes that owners say skate on wet bark instead of digging in
  • Noticeably short on power in hardwood past roughly 8" — it is a limbing saw by capability, not just by bar length
  • 2.5Ah kit pack is the smallest in EGO's chainsaw range; EGO's own claim is 100 cuts in 4x4 pine
  • Pre-dates the metal spikes and twist-dial tensioner on EGO's newer saws, yet costs about what the newer 16" kit does
  • Scattered owner reports of dead-on-arrival units, so check it cuts before the return window closes
