The first AK-platform saw Stihl has fitted with a 14-inch bar, and the top of the homeowner battery range: 1.2 kW of mechanical output, a 6.5 lb powerhead, 10.1 lb with the AK 30 S pack, sold as a $500 set with that pack and the AL 101 charger. The extra two inches of bar over the MSA 70 is the point — it reaches through a 12-inch round in one pass instead of two. The trade is runtime: Stihl rates it at up to 35 minutes on the AK 30 S, which is less than the smaller MSA 70 manages on the plain AK 30 because the bigger motor drains the pack faster. It also needs the AK 30 S specifically for full output; fit an older AK 10 or AK 20 and Stihl says cutting performance drops. Firewood cutters should look at the AP-platform MSA 220 C-B instead; this is for people who want one tidy, quiet kit for a large yard.

Best for: Owners of larger properties who want a single quiet battery kit with enough bar for 12-inch rounds and no interest in a second battery platform.

Manufacturer figures except the engine class and single-pass cut, which are derived here. What each spec means

  • First 14" bar on the AK system
  • 10.1 lb with pack
  • 35 min on the AK 30 S

Where it is strong

  • 14-inch bar is the longest in Stihl's homeowner battery range — one pass through a 12-inch round
  • 1.2 kW from a 6.5 lb powerhead; 10.1 lb ready to cut with the pack fitted
  • Set price covers battery and charger, so there is no second purchase to discover
  • Brushless motor, Ematic oiling and a transparent oil tank
  • 5-year consumer warranty on Stihl battery products — five times the 1 year its gas saws now get

Where it falls short

  • Up to 35 minutes on the AK 30 S — shorter than the smaller MSA 70, because the bigger motor pulls harder
  • Needs the AK 30 S for full output; older AK 10 and AK 20 packs reduce cutting performance
  • $500 puts it beside the AP-platform MSA 220 C-B tool at $450, which is a far stronger saw
  • 1/4" fine-pitch chain on a 14" bar dulls quickly in dirty wood
  • New enough that there is no owner history on it yet
