The saw that invented this category and the one utility and line-clearance crews actually carry. A 6" bar on an M12 pack, 4.1 lb bare and under five pounds with the battery, rated for 3" hardwood and about 120 cuts per charge. It is a one-handed tool by design — that is the whole point, and why it ships with a scabbard — which makes it the fastest way to take a limb off a fence line, a right-of-way, or a storm pile without putting a full-size saw in the air. Where it stops being useful is anything structural: past about 3" it bogs and the oiler cannot keep a loaded chain wet. If you want the same idea with more reach, the 8" M18 Hatchet is the step up, at nearly twice the price. $269 for the kit is cheap by chainsaw standards and expensive for a pruner.

Best for: Line-clearance, utility, and orchard crews who need a one-hand pruning saw on the M12 platform rather than a chainsaw.

Manufacturer figures except the engine class and single-pass cut, which are derived here. What each spec means

  • 4.1 lb bare
  • Cuts 3" hardwood
  • 120 cuts per charge

Where it is strong

  • Under five pounds with the battery, so it rides on a belt or in a bucket all day
  • Oregon bar and chain, scabbard, and scrench included — a complete kit, not a bare tool with a box
  • About 120 cuts per charge on the included XC4.0, enough for a full fence line
  • Runs the M12 packs that utility and electrical crews already carry
  • Compact enough to work inside shrubs and fence lines where a full-size saw cannot reach

Where it falls short

  • Hard ceiling at about 3" hardwood — it is a pruner, not a small chainsaw
  • Modest oiler; sustained cutting runs the chain hotter than the bar likes
  • One-handed use is the intended technique, which still means chainsaw PPE and chainsaw consequences
  • $269 is a lot for a 6" bar if you only prune a few times a year
  • 1/4" pitch chain is a specialty loop, not something every hardware store stocks
